The Celtic Barochan Cross

Relocated from Barochan hamlet (in 1890s) for safe keeping from the elements, the Barochan Celtic Cross is now housed inside Paisley Abbey. The Barochan Celtic Cross was carved in the 700s A.D.

Over three centuries earlier, before the Celtic church evangelized Scotland, Barochan was the site of a Roman fort.

Paisley Abbey was founded in the 700s A.D. by St. Mirin approximately the time the Barochan Cross was created.  Paisley Abbey has been renovated several times over the 13 centuries after St. Mirin established it.

The present Abbey partly dates to 1163 A.D., when Walter FitzAlan, first High Stewart of Scotland, gave the charter.
